Irrigation in brackish water

tomatoes irrigated with brackish water

Salt excess in water is one of the main irrigation issues in need of a solution. A high concentration of salt in the water or soil negatively affects the return on crops and is a cause of soil degradation and underground water pollution.

Thanks to its action directly on the minerals, the Aqua-4D® water treatment system allows high salinity irrigation without damaging the plant. By improving the plants’ absorption of brackish treated water, the production of salt sensitive varieties becomes possible thanks to Aqua-4D®.

Effects of Aqua-4D® water treatment on irrigation with brackish water

Irrigation using a water containing 2.5 g/L of salt

The experiment was made on 2 different types of cultures:

  • Culture of cress: 1ml of grains is dispersed on a sheet of cotton wool. This allows us to have a good view of the germination of the grains, as well as the growth.
  • Culture of Fittonia: The plants are put in soil in pots and the goal is to study the growth.

The daily quantity of water given to the plants was always identical, independently of the type of water treatment.

Letter of January 30, 2009

I would like to inform you about the positive results of the use of the physical water treatment system Aqua-4D® for our tomato’s greenhouse in the south of Tunisia.

As you already know, we irrigate with a water from a geothermic source in the region of Gabés that has an EC of 4. With the use of fertilizers, the EC increases to 7, even 8. These working conditions are extremely difficult for the irrigation and the tomato’s health.

We have set up your electromagnetic water system in August 2008, instead of investing in reverse osmosis system (two times more expensive) and noticed that thanks to this system, we have:

  • reduced the use of fertilisers up to 25%
  • preserved and increased the quality of tomatoes
  • eliminated the scaling in our water piping system

Once installed, the system requires no maintenance, so it does not disturb the normal production cycle.

Thus, I would like to congratulate you for this great technology that is very efficient under harsh conditions for culture and water quality.

I would be delighted to recommend this system to any colleagues working in the same field.

Follow up of June 26, 2011

Since when are you equipped with the physical water treatment Aqua 4D® for your 20-hectacre field in Tunisia?

we are equipped with Aqua-4D® since the second quarter of 2008 for the first 10 hectares and since 2009 for the second 10 hectares.

How many cycles of tomato cultures (seasons) have you done since the installation of the physical water treatment Aqua-4D® in your greenhouse?

We have done 5 cycles of tomato culture in our greenhouse on 20 hectares. The first culture started on October 2008.

Since when have you stopped using nematicides?

We had a nematode attack with important damage on culture just before installing the physical water treatment system Aqua-4D®; we did not do any special treatments. Next period, despite the nematode presence at the beginning of the cycle, we had no damage. We used no nematicides or others desinfectants on soil. The only treatment we got was a solarisation process against bad weeds.

What is your plantation date? What is the density in m2 for your plantation?

We start in august-september with a density of 1.3 plant/m2, which means 2.6 heads/m2 for round tomatoes and 1.7 plants/m2 which means 3.4 heads/m2 for cherry tomatoes.

What is the culture duration?

The culture duration is from August to June (it is a long culture process)

What variety (cherry, big fruit, bunch)? What yield per m2? Did you notice anything about the caliber?

Right now, we are cultivating cherry tomatoes on the 20-hectares greenhouse with a yield of 10 kg to 12 kg export. In 2010, we made round tomatoes with 18kg export.

Because of the salinity, we have a good quality fruit (firm, red, with good taste). The caliber is good thanks to the physical water treatment Aqua-4D®. What is surprising is that we got very few cases of apical disease despite the heat and the salinity. I think that the water treatment Aqua-4D® allows a better assimiliation of Calcium in high quantity from the irrigation water.
