Domestic water pipes are often clogged, mainly because of limescale. These scaling problems often occur in hot-water pipes and water heaters, and lead to reduced or interrupted water flow and to an increase in energy consumption. Machines wear out more quickly and there is excessive consumption of cleaning products and other chemical products that pollute drinking water.

However, when water has low levels of lime, it is often corrosive to metal water pipes. In all cases, this can result in high pipe repair costs (leaks or blockages).
